Rethinking Catechesis in a Synodal Perspective

North America

Format: Videos / Audio

Type: Formation material

Organisation: Organisation / Association /Movement

The synodal vision calls for a reimagining vision of catechesis—shifting from a sometimes too hierarchical model that prioritizes mainly content-centered transmission to a more participatory process-oriented faith formation that embraces the vision of a synodal Church as a learning community in which we are all journeying together listening to the Spirit.

On the occasion of the 90th Anniversary of the NCCL (NCCL – National Community of Catechetical Leaders) a Conference took place last November 15th, 2025 in Baltimore entitled “Hope for the Future: Proclaiming and Teaching the Word of Jesus Christ in a New World”. The Closing keynote address was entrusted to sr. Natalie Becquartm XMCJ, Undersecretary of the General Secretariat of the Synod,

Rather than positioning catechists as knowledge distributors and participants as passive recipients,  Sr. Nathalie affirms that synodal catechesis recognizes all baptized persons as both teachers and learners, drawing on their sensus fidei and lived experience in a spirit of “exchange of gift,” fostering their relational skills so that they deepen their own vocational journey as witness of Christ in their specific context.
